Book Yona of the Dawn, Vol. 18 Review :

Zeno is a mysterious character from his first appearance in volume 9 of Yona of the Dawn, but he does a lot of work to make you forget that. Surely, someone so happy and cuddly isn't hiding anything from us...? Nine books later, we learn that yes, he has been. The hints are there if you reread with an eye for them. There's a moment where Jaeha wonders why Hak and Zeno have managed to escape a battle without any injuries. There's a moment where Zeno calls an elderly woman "young lady." There are several moments where Zeno attempts to shield Yona with his own body, and several more where he shows an insightful perceptiveness that belies his ostentatious innocence. This is the volume where all of that comes to the forefront, and Zeno finally gets the spotlight after nine books as everyone's cheerleader. Things get much gorier from here on out.At this point, Zeno has basically hit his threshold. He has to use his powers because his power is all that's left, with the other three dragons sick and Hak outnumbered. This is a big moment where we finally see Zeno drop his usual cutesy act and he becomes deathly serious. It's a big relief when there's a lull in the fighting and he stops to ask everyone if they're okay and explain what's going on, before getting back to business. It's an even bigger relief when he manages to scare the Kai soldiers off and everyone except Hak and Jaeha (who are still clearly relieved) smother him with hugs, just relieved that he's *alive.* It takes a confused Zeno a moment to realize that's what's got them all worked up, and the way he reassures them that yes, he is alive, before happily exclaiming over just how adorable they all are, has a huge punch later on.The talk the other characters have with Zeno about his powers and his status as the original Yellow Dragon from the kingdom's founding myth is actually a really effective storytelling method. Zeno says a bunch of things during this conversation that are strictly true, but lacking in pertinent detail. We immediately get the pertinent detail in a series of flashbacks in the following chapters, and it becomes clear that he's softening his reality for the sake of Yona and the others. The most obvious one is about his wife, Kaya: when Yona asks if his immortality means he's been alone all this time, Zeno immediately brushes it off by pointing out that he was married. This not only serves to reassure Yona, but it also shocks everyone and starts winding down the conversation. But when you get to that part of the flashbacks, you find out that Zeno's marriage was probably of a very short duration-- his wife died young, and was actually already dying of an illness when he first met her. Like he has all along, Zeno is doing a lot of work to deflect his companions' concerns here. And yet, he's not lying. He was alone for most of that time -- he doesn't actually say he wasn't -- and yet Kaya did do a lot of work toward helping him survive all that time. While we see him suffering quite a bit of loneliness after her death, it becomes clear that he learned a lot of his ability to just take joy in things from her.The flashbacks end with Zeno's realization that Yona, the person he and the other dragons are waiting for, has finally been reincarnated. He wakes up surrounded by Yona and the dragons, and after we've just been subjected to three or four chapters of him being serious and sad, it's a huge relief when he just pulls them all into a great big hug and wistfully smiles because they've gotten so big.For Zeno, it was worth waiting 2,000 years for Yona and the other dragons. For me, it was also worth waiting nine books to get to this backstory. Also worth waiting for? The bonus story at the back of the book about Jaeha attempting to keep the other three dragons from killing themselves. Yes, even the immortal one.
I started buying the manga because they only had 1 season online and I fell in love. I just HAD to figure how Yona's story ends. I was so excited when vol. 18 arrived yesterday. I finished right before bed and I loved it!
