This was another good book in the Dominion series, and this time it was back in Seiran's POV.Much like the other books, this one was fairly slow-paced and focused on the characters for most of the book, especially Seiran's relationship with Gabe and Seiran's mental health, but there was a general feeling of something being wrong, and then right near the end, the bad guy showed up and things happened. Also like the other books, even though there was a small problem in Seiran and Gabe's relationship and Seiran still had some anxiety struggles, everyone was super supportive. And despite the climax with the bad guy, this was ultimately a positive, somewhat fluffy book. (These books are never as intense or dramatic as the blurbs make them sound.) Admittedly, it did feel a bit repetitive since it followed the same general formula as the other books, but it was still enjoyable to read.Things in the overall story (the Dominion, the Ascendance, getting equal rights and treatment for male witches) did move forward some at least. And one difference between this and previous book was that there was less Jamie and Kelly. Seiran also had his mental illnesses under control more, though that was partially due to his mental connection with Gabe and Gabe's powers.Overall, despite being a bit repetitive, this was another enjoyable book about likeable supernatural characters in a series that includes lots of mental illness rep and some terrible situations but still manages to stay light and positive overall.Rating: 3.5 StarsOriginal Review @ Metaphors and Moonlight (link in profile) Compared to the other dominion books, this one is sparse on sex scenes. But it holds up the series tradition of putting real relationship building on a level above basal desires. My only complaint is that there isn't more. The world created in this series is still far too much of a mystery. The mythos of the different magical... Creatures? Races? Whatever... Are vivid, elaborate, and completely shrouded.I want answers. ;)There is a great wealth of back story available here... Great depths of mythology that can be tapped, and a world of astounding detail, depth, and devotion could be created from this story line. While that would shift the series out of the light romance genre - into (hopefully) high fantasy, I'd happily welcome a contemporary gay high fantasy series. Contemporary (i.e. modern world) fantasy is a rare enough thing as it is.While the author tends toward light romances, this series has enough breadth to become a foundation of much bigger things. I hope that is something we eventually see happen.Taking the best bits of the Laurell K. Hamilton tradition: cute boys, sexual tension, and a healthy dose of mystery that the lead character has to solve while finding them self unexpectedly stuck in the middle of the situation, in far over their head, and forced to grow rapidly beyond what they believed possible, she has a good base to expand this series beyond light romance and into something deeper.Lissa's books consistently make me feel good. They're great reads that balance character and world development well, but never seem to answer all the questions they raise. The easy answer is to create a path for a follow up story.Seiran remains one of my favorite characters, but Kelly comes a close second (though his sports obsession would drive me crazy). The craving of sensual contact over sexual gratification is what seems to separate her books from most other light romance in my mind. But the world building possibilities here. Tolkien? No. Not yet. But the magnitude of the magical deviations makes the comparison possible. The world is still developing. Tolkien's world was complete. The war here is subtle. It's more behind the scenes. But the scenes are action based - improving slightly (in my mind) the huge story as Asimov did in his Foundation series.I wish there was a tad more depth here. The story line is great. It keeps moving. The characters grow, and learn from each other. They deal with real problems and actually make progress with their personal (and interpersonal) issues. With just a little more depth... A few more answers... And we could have the first mainstream gay fantasy world here. Some of the connections are a bit too easy. There needs to be a little heartbreak somewhere to balance things out (more of a complaint with the Hidden Gem series) and make it feel a little more real in that not everything works out perfectly all the time. But those are high level criticisms for a light romance.Five stars... So long as the next one comes out before George R. R. Martin finally releases the next Song of Ice and Fire book...
